Kaassouffle (Dutch Cheese Snack)
By Chef Belgium (@chef_belgium)
Ingredients
- 1 package puff pastry (thawed (2 sheets))
- 6 slices Gouda cheese
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- salt (to taste)
- black pepper (to taste)
Directions
- 1Place the defrosted puff pastry sheets on a flat surface and roll them out slightly with a rolling pin. Then cut them in thirds along the existing perforated lines.
- 2Fold the cheese in half and place one folded slice on the top half of each piece of puff pastry. Then fold the puff pastry from bottom to top to close it.
- 3Use a fork to press down the edges to keep the cheese from falling out. Then cut off any excess.
- 4Whisk the eggs in a small bowl. Set aside.
- 5Season the breadcrumbs with salt and pepper and place on a plate.
- 6Brush each kaassoufle with the beaten egg and then coat in the seasoned breadcrumbs.
- 7Heat the deep fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and fry each kaassoufle for about 2 minutes on each side. Flip over when they start to puff up and are golden brown. See notes for alternative cooking methods.
- 8Serve with a dip of choice (but careful, they will be hot).
